An AI program is now using the same algorithm that predicts which NBA team will win a Stanley Cup next year.
It’s called “Basketball AI” and it’s using the AI model to make predictions for the upcoming Stanley Cup playoffs.
The AI program has been trained to find and predict the odds of winning a Stanley CUP in 2020 and the current Stanley Cup Finals.
BasketballAI says it’s the first time a team has been able to do this using a computer algorithm.
“Basketball is a game that we’ve been playing for a long time,” the program’s founder, Kevin O’Connor, told CBC News.
“When I first started thinking about what this AI could be, I had a big picture in mind of what I wanted the AI to do and what it should be capable of doing, but also what I didn’t want it to be able to be good at, which is predicting the Stanley Cups.”
O’Connor says his program is not a prediction engine, but rather a tool to help athletes prepare for the NBA playoffs.
“We’ve trained the AI for NBA basketball, we’ve trained it for football, we’re training it for basketball and soccer, it’s trained for baseball, and we’re trained for cricket, so we have a very broad range of different sports,” he said.
NBA champion Steph Curry is currently the only NBA player with a winning record in the postseason.
But O’Connors team is working on a bigger goal, to develop a more accurate model to predict the outcome of every Stanley Cup final.
“I think that if you take a look at the NBA Finals, we think we’ve got the best model of the NBA finals in a long, long time.
We’ve got it right now, and I think we’ll continue to get better,” he explained.
“If you look at other sports, it seems like we’re in the process of getting it right.
We’re getting it very close.
But if you look more broadly at sports that we see that we have some sort of predictive ability, then I think that’s where we’re at right now.”
The Stanley Cup finals will be played on January 11 in Seattle, Washington.
This is the fourth time this year that basketball AI has been used.
In the 2015-16 NBA Finals between the Toronto Raptors and the Boston Celtics, the AI program made a prediction for the outcome in that game.
That prediction was correct.
O-Connor is currently looking for a second team to help him train his AI program.
“One of the things we have to do with the NHL and basketball is we have two teams competing in the Stanley cup playoffs, and the one team that wins the Stanley championship is the one that’s going to have the most AI that they can get,” he told CBC.
